Key Cabinet Tags Explained

If you are been searching for a key cabinet, I bet that you are slightly overwhelmed by the one tag and the two tag systems.  However, the key cabinet tag system isn't tough to understand, and depending on what kind of business you are in, which system to go with shouldn't be tough to figure out.

One Tag Key System Explained

A single tag key cabinet system is the most simple kind of key box out there.  These are usually a little bit smaller and will range between 10 keys to upwards of 200.  Basically in a single key box system there are rows of hooks, but the hooks are not numbered.  The tags themselves act as the number, and it's pretty clear when there is a key missing.  The problem with a one tag key box system, is that if a key is lost, there is no replacement for it.  Although, isn't as big of a deal in most small businesses.

Businesses That Could Use a One Tag Key Cabinet System

Golf Courses – This is a goodillustration of a company that needs a one tag system.  There could be 20 keys that access utility rooms, gear stores, a restaurant or perhaps on site bathrooms.  in this example a basic key box will function just fine.

Real Estate Office - Say you are a contractor and you have built an entirely new neighborhood of houses.  Having a one tag key box system available with one key to each home is very valuable.  After you are done showing the house you just put the key back in the key box. If it isn’t there, you know someone is at the location.

Taxi Cab Service - It isn't hard to see which cars are in use with a one tag system.  You know when the driver’s shift is over that the key will be returned to the box, and in most towns this is all that you will need.  Granted, some place like New York City may need to go with a two tag key box, but that is the exception.

What is a Two Tag Key Cabinet System?

Two tag key box systems add another layer of security and complexity to your key box system.  In a two tag key box system each key and hook is identified by a number from one to 100 in consecutive order on each panel. The two tag key box has both a file key tag, as well as a duplicate key tag for each number.  This ensures that there is always one key that is permanently on the hook – this in essence, adds more security to the key box, as the duplicate key is the only one that’s used.

Businesses That Could Use a Two Tag Key Cabinet System

As you can probably see there are specific applications where a single tag system just won’t cut it.

Here are some examples:

Hospitals - With dozens of rooms and patients that constantly need to be cared for, a hospital is is a prime example of where you want a two tag commercial key box.  The backup keys make sure you can always access the areas of the facility you need, and with hundreds of people using the key box, a digital lock may be a good addition as well.

Motels – While many hotels are going the route of digital key cards for their rooms, many still employ real keys for non sleeping areas of the property such as restaurants, shops and utility rooms.  For the biggest properties a two tag key box system is probably going to be your best bet.  If it is a boutique motel, you may be able to get by with a one key system

Universities or Schools – With dozens of rooms and dozens of keys, a two tag system is almost always the best choice for most schools or other government buildings.  The added security is a big benefit, although you probably don’t need any thing more than a basic combination or key lock.
